Biography

Dr Richard Middlemiss is a Royal Academy of Engineering research fellow in the James Watt School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow. His main focus is on the development of a new generation of pendulum-based MEMS gravity sensors for subterranean imaging in fields such as volcanology, geothermal engineering, and slope stability

Before his Fellowship, Richard was based at the Institute for Gravitational Research, and with whom he still closely collaborates.  His PhD research there was was published in the journal 'Nature', and was subsequently named as one of the top ten global breakthroughs in global physics for 2016 by the Institute of Physics.

Dr Middlemiss also leads the development of a new MEMS sensor for the calibration of scanning probe microscopes. This work is performed in collaboration with the Dutch company – ‘Optics11’. Dr Middlemiss has been interviewed on BBC Radio 4’s flagship science show - ‘Inside Science’, and has presented/produced several short documentary films. During his PhD, Richard was the winner of the Scottish final of ‘FameLab’, and the winner the UK final of the ‘Three Minute Thesis’ competition. In 2018 Richard was awarded the Isambard Kingdom Brunel award lecture by the British Science Association in recognition of his research and outreach activities.
