Richard is a Royal Society University Research Fellow and proleptic Reader in Optics. His research interests centre on instrumentation, particularly microscopy and automation. He is a passionate advocate of openness in science, and leads the OpenFlexure Project, a fully motorised microscope with completely open designs and instructions. This has been replicated thousands of times around the world, in settings from maker clubs to hospitals to superresolution imaging labs. Understanding how to document and share scientific instruments such that they can be reproduced accurately in many independent labs is a crucial part of making experimental science more reproducible and trustworthy. More generally, his research group develop automated instrumentation to solve research challenges in the physical and life sciences, from nanoparticle characterisation to malaria diagnostics.
