Anthony Clarkson has been awarded the 2020 Technician Award by the Institute of physics. The IOP Technician Award highlights the diverse role of technicians in education, research and industry.
The IOP has said that Anthony has won for his “pioneering contribution towards the industrial deployment of cosmic-ray muography technology and his outstanding, ongoing contributions to high-energy, fundamental nuclear physics experiments across the globe.”
Anthony has been a technician within the Nuclear Physics group for 18 years and in that time has led the development of numerous cutting-edge particle detectors for fundamental physics experiments. He has been recognised for these contributions as well as his pioneering work in designing, developing and deploying cosmic-ray muography technology within the UK Nuclear Industry.
Anthony led a team of researchers at the University and its spin-out company Lynkeos Technology, to deliver this first-of-a-kind system to Sellafield as part of a £1.6 million Innovate UK contract. This system is now used to inspect the contents of nuclear waste containers using cosmic radiation. Tony’s efforts have directly led to numerous awards for Lynkeos Technology including the IOP Business Start-up Award 2018 and the Rushlight Nuclear Energy Award 2019.
Please join us in congratulating Tony for his win!
