Job group: Full-time PhD student

My name is Wandiahyel Yaduma a PhD research student in the School of Molecular Biosciences, where I work under the supervision of Dr Christopher McInerny of University of Glasgow and Prof Gwyn Gould of University of Strathclyde. I earned my MSc and BSc degrees in Biochemistry from Modibbo Adama University of Technology Yola and began my academic career in 2014 as an assistant lecturer at Adamawa state college of education in Hong, Nigeria.

Due to my commitment and enthusiasm for science and research, I was nominated and awarded a Tertiary Education Trust Fund PhD Fellowship to study at the University of Glasgow in 2018. The beginning of my PhD was quite challenging as I had little knowledge and techniques of molecular biology, but then I was fortunate to be surrounded by supportive individuals and a conducive working environment that helped bring out the best in me. Over time, I acquired laboratory skills and competence that have helped me gain confidence within and beyond the school’s walls. I have learned from and interacted with a diverse community of students and researchers in which we were able to influence each other intellectually. Indeed, the University of Glasgow is a “Future World Changer” and I am proud to be a member of the diverse students that attends this institution.

Outside of school, I volunteer for St. Andrew's First Aid, where I serve as a first aider at local and international events in Glasgow city and Scotland. Volunteering has allowed me to relate directly with my immediate community and to meet individuals outside of the university and it’s fun. I also enjoy taking long walks and spending quality time with my wife and 2-year-old son; we spend our weekends and time visiting friends and family throughout the United Kingdom.
