The School of Molecular Bioscience's Approach to Athena Swan
The School of Molecular Biosciences is committed to tackling gender inequalities in higher education, and prioritises promoting equality and opportunity. We work collaboratively to create a supportive and inclusive school, while supporting career development and progression of our members, irrespective of gender or lived experience.
The Athena Swan charter informs our efforts to improve and embody equality, diversity, and inclusion principles within our School. We work hard to integrate our member’s lived experiences, interests, and intersectionalities into our research, teaching, culture, and School ethos. Our Awards
We celebrated our Departmental Bronze Award in 2017 (pictured), marking our team’s foundational work towards upholding and promoting the careers of women in STEMM. We welcomed our Departmental Silver Award in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, reflecting our dedication to not only improving gender balances in STEMM, but our commitment to upholding inclusion and equality goes far beyond redressing gender imbalance.
Our Initiatives
Our flagship initiatives are co-created through collaborative efforts of our Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee Working Groups. These include:
- Inclusive Leadership
- Work/Life Balance,
- Maternity, Adoption, Family, & Paternity
- Learning, Teaching, and Scholarship
- Disability Support
- LGBTQIA+ Inclusion
- Creating a Culture of Belonging
We assess our EDI and Athena Swan initiatives using annual surveys, open-door policies, Intersectionality Champions, peer-peer feedback, 1-1 interviews and focus groups, and discussion at researcher development days.
