Research and Scholarship

Research in SMLC brings a transnational and multi-lingual perspective to the questions that preoccupy humanity and the humanities in the twenty-first century.

A core feature of our research community is the breadth of its engagement with questions of ongoing ethical, social and cultural concern. Current themes include legacies of empire and slavery, migration and exile, travel and tourism, environmental issues, minority languages, urban space, geopoetics, work and consumption, illness and health, memory and trauma, gender, sexuality and gender-based violence.

The School is home to the Centre for Comparative Literature and Translation Studies, an interdisciplinary hub for research on the circulation of texts, images, ideas, people and objects across linguistic and cultural boundaries. Meanwhile, the Stirling Maxwell Centre for the Study of Text/Image Cultures draws on Glasgow’s longstanding reputation in this field and on the outstanding collections held at the university. Scholarship of Learning and Teaching (SoTL) is actively promoted in the School by our Language Teaching Scholarship Cluster.
