Dr Erin McNulty passed her viva in June this year. Her thesis focussed on ‘new speakers of Manx Gaelic’ and was entitled “Cre’n sorçh dy Ghaelg t’ou loayrt nish?”: The Intersection of Ideologies and Morphosyntactic Variation in New Speakers of Manx Gaelic. Her supervisors consists of a cross-College team including Prof Bernie O’Rourke (SMLC), Prof Jenifer Smith (ELL) and Prof Roibeard Ó Maolalaigh (School of Humanities). Her external examiners included Prof Helen Kelly-Holmes (University of Limerick) and internal examiner was Dr Louis Strange (English and Linguistics). 
 
Dr Ida Syversten passed her viva in February this. Her thesis involved an examination of ‘Forced migration and English capital. A critical sociolinguistic analysis of English among Congolese refugees in Norway’. https://www.inn.no/english/research/doctoral-degree/future-public-defences/public-defence-ida-syvertsen/ 
Her external examiners included Prof Anna De Fina (Georgetown University) and Prof Nico Nassenstein (Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz) as the main opponents and Prof Kristin Vold Lexander (Inland Norway University) as the internal examiner. 
 
Ida spent a year at the University of Glasgow as part of an Erasmus+ visiting scholar programme under the mentorship of Bernie O’Rourke who was also part of the supervisory team.
