Biography
Dr Vivian Binnie graduated in dentistry from the University of Glasgow in 1983. She then worked in the Community Dental Service in the NHS, before working in the Dept of Public Health, University of Glasgow. In 1990, she completed a Masters in Public Health (MPH) and in 2004 a Dental Public Health PhD, both at University of Glasgow. She is also a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
She is a senior clinical lecturer based within the Community Oral Sciences Unit of Glasgow Dental Hospital and School. She holds the posts of Deputy Director of Dental Education, and the Lead for Dental Educational Research and Scholarship for the Dental School. She is also the chair of the Equality and Diversity Dental School Working Group. She is a Senior Fellow of Higher Education Academy/RET ( 2017) and a holder of the Association of Dental Education in Europe( ADEE) Mature Educator Award ( 2023).
Nationally and internationally, she is currently the President of BARDES (British Alliance for Dental Educational Research and Scholarship, 2023- 2024), and Chair of the ADEE Community of Practice ‘Students as Partners’ ( 2022-).
Research interests
Viv’s main research interests now centre on educational research, particularly within the clinical discipline of dentistry. Her current educational interests are around student engagement, particularly from a ‘student as partners’ perspective, and include the use of peer assisted learning (PAL), non-technical skills, and equality diversity and inclusion. Viv’s work has been supported by the University of Glasgow Learning Teaching and Development Fund (5 grants), with her most recent(2022-2023) being a staff student partnership which reviewed an EDI area of teaching (LGBTQ+ ).
Other areas of research interest are student motivation as defined by self-determination theory (SDT) and assessment and feedback. She also leads the Community in Dental Educational Research and Scholarship (CiDERS) group in the Dental School, which both allows a platform for dissemination of ongoing work within the Dental School, as well as a forum for mentoring and developing early career educators.
She has published widely and presented and led workshops in ‘Students as partners’ nationally and internationally, at both Association for Dental Education in Europe(ADEE) and International Assn for Dental Research ( Education Research Group).
She supervises and works with postgraduate dentists/health professionals at Doctoral/Masters level in the Health Professions Education Programme, SMDN. Supervised and completed doctorates include the topics of Stress and Resilience, as well as the relevance of Self Determination Theory (SDT) within dental student populations.

Teaching
Viv is a highly experienced teacher, a small group specialist, and teaches in all five years of the BDS curriculum. She is involved in managing and teaching aspects of behavioural sciences and dental public health at undergraduate level. She led on the development of the communication skills, stress and resilience, equality, diversity and inclusion, and input in how to deal with tobacco and the delivery of smoking cessation advice to patients, across the BDS curriculum.
She also teaches at postgraduate level, including the MFDS part 2 course for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Glasgow.
She held the post of Education Lead for Patient Management Health Promotion (2012-2023). She is currently part of the Core Group of the Dental School overseeing the development of the new intended learning outcomes, to satisfy requirements as stipulated by the General Dental Council via its recently released ‘ The safe practitioner: A framework of behaviours and outcomes for dental professional education’ guidelines’.
