Biography

Rhian is a University Lecturer (Nursing & Health Care) and Senior Researcher (with the Scottish School of Primary Care). Based at University of Glasgow, she has won recurrent research grants for her work in developing and evaluating a self-report for men who have had genitourinary cancer and who are at risk of lymphoedema, a group that has been largely ignored in research so far.

In her PhD thesis Rhian developed a model of collaborative working in an asset-based context which incorporates theories of motivation, learning, group-working and leadership. The model uses self-determination theory which resonates with current changes in healthcare and was widely discussed after presentation at an international Virtue Ethics conference in 2017.  The learning gained has been useful in the work with the Scottish School of Primary Care in evaluating the current transformation occurring in Primary Health Care.

Rhian is a Chartered Physiotherapist, a member of the Scientific Committee of the British Lymphology Society and president of Casley-Smith International. She contributes to intra-university scholarship groups particularly on digital and workplace learning. Rhian enjoys seeking opportunities for collaborations between diverse professionals and sectors to create different approaches to learning and service provision.

Research interests

  • Genitourinary cancer-related lymphoedema: barriers to disclosure of symptoms for men
  • Action research by health professionals for service improvement
  • Change management
  • Evaluation of change in health care service delivery
  • Self Determination Theory in health care
  • Virtue Ethics
