Reproductive Endocrinology
Infertility is a major issue within the Health Service at the present time. A major area within this is the control of ovulation and optimisation of fertilisation in vitro which focuses specifically on sperm function and fertilisation in vitro, and growth factors and ovarian function. The research component of this work interdigitates with the clinical assisted conception service based in the Royal Infirmary site [Professor Richard Fleming].
Disturbed ovarian function is associated with abnormal energy metabolism in women of reproductive age. There are clear associations with atherogenic lipoprotein profiles. Current investigations involve studies of the roles of anthropmetric criteria, lipases, androgens and oestrogens. Insulin sensitising agents are also being explored [Professor Richard Fleming].
A particular exciting area is in research into the role of Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) and its role in clinical practice [Professor Scott Nelson].
