Academic Foundation Training
The Academic Unit of Anaesthesia supports and is closely involved with the Academic Foundation Year program and the Academic Core Training program (GATE).

Post-graduate posts
SCRED post
We have SCRED posts available which are advertised nationally every few years. This is a part-time Clinical Lecturer post taken up during training for the duration of the training post. It is expected that this time will be spent furthering post-doctoral research with a view to an academic research career.
Clinical Lecturer posts
We have posts available for trainees within the West of Scotland who would like to do a higher research and teaching position within their higher blocks. These posts are taken up on a part-time basis over 12 months and will be advertised through NES. Applicants are required to get permission from the training committee before applying.
Clinical Research fellows
There is currently funding for four research fellows in Anaesthesia. These posts come with full salary support by virtue of a part-time commitment to clinical duties. The posts will be advertised annually and appointment is for a two year period. Successful candidates are expected to undertake a higher degree.
Self funding students
We are happy to take self funded PhD students from all medical, nursing and AHP backgrounds, as long as they meet the University of Glasgow entry requirements.

Doctoral degrees
The Academic Unit of Anaesthesia supports a programme of Higher Degrees. This is in addition to the Undergraduate MBChB Course & the Intercalated BSc Med Sci
We are running PhD training for both Medical & Science graduates and an MD programme for medically qualified graduates.
Current projects underway include:
- An analysis of outcomes following Acute Kidney Injury in Intensive Care
- Impact of a post-intensive care rehabilitation clinic on PICS
- Morbidity and mortality following burns injury
- Association of lifestyle factors on pregnancy and neonatal outcomes
- Reducing unscheduled care use in acute and critical care
Recently completed Higher Degrees include:
- Outcomes for patients with alcoholic liver disease in ICU
- The right ventricular response to lung resection
- Characteristics and outcomes of solid tumour patients in ICU
The opportunity exists for projects which are developments of any of these themes.
The Academic Unit is based at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and there are strong links with Surgery, Biochemistry, Robertson Centre for Biostatistics, Scottish Intensive Care Society and the University of Aberdeen.
- The duration of a MSc is one year full-time
- The duration of a MD is two years full-time and 4 years part-time
- The duration of a PhD is three years full-time and 5 years part-time
