Palliative and End of Life Care
Our aim is to improve the way we care for people who are dying, and how we support the people who matter to them.
We also aim to enhance quality of life for people with chronic and life-limiting conditions and their carers.
Our research activities are responsive to strategic health policy priorities around person-centred care but focus specifically on addressing the gap between policy and practice in the delivery and implementation of person-centred care, predominantly within the contexts of palliative and end of life care.
Our group is directed by nurses in collaboration with academics and other health care staff. We include researchers, academic staff and PhD students from around the world and use a range of research methods in our work. At the heart of our work is person centred care and all our work is informed by public partners and advisers with lived experience of coping with, dying from, or caring for someone with a life limiting illness.
The group is led by Professor Bridget Johnston, a Clinical Professor of Nursing and Palliative Care and Director of Research in the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing. We take pride in delivering nurse-led research within a range of contexts, embedded within a culture of meaningful patient and public engagement. We put people at the centre of how we do research, and we champion the role of nurses as leaders in research.
