Multi-Agency Simulation Day

On 13th March, the University of Glasgow and Glasgow Caledonian worked collaboratively with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to provide a multi-agency simulation day for undergraduate students.

The students attended a multi-vehicle road traffic collision, which resulted in a bus entering the River Clyde from Albert Bridge in the city centre of Glasgow. The collision resulted in multiple casualties both on land and in the water. The simulation involved Police Scotland, His Majesty’s Coastguard as well as students from different healthcare studies to manage and care for patients in a face paced environment.

The major incident simulation provided an opportunity for students to be fully immersed in a multi-casualty event in which they were required to work closely with various agencies and were able to gain a deeper understanding of their roles and provide fundamental support for those involved in the collision.

Our lecturer Liz Simpson worked alongside two UofG student nurses, a UofG medical student, and a Glasgow Caledonian University paramedic student to create a poster which presents the reasoning behind organising the event, as well as sharing the thoughts of the students involved. The poster was presented by Liz and our teaching assistant Julia Fowler at the Scottish SIMposium Event at the University of Edinburgh in June.

Overall, the simulation has been regarded as a huge success, and the team are already in talks to organise another event later this year.
