William Hunter (1718-1783)
Anatomist and obstetrician
Studied with William Cullen for 3 years and was awarded an MD from the University in 1750. He was appointed Physician Extraordinary to the Queen after attending the birth of her first child and his research greatly advanced the field of obstetrics. Hunter had many interests and was a great collector of antiquities, art, books and coins. He donated his collection to the University upon his death and this formed the basis of the current Hunterian Museum. and Gallery.189
