Dame Anne Louise McIllroy (1878-1968)

Obstetrician and Gynaecologist

One of Glasgow's first women medical graduates. Specialising in gynaecology and obstetrics she was in command of a unit of the Scottish Women's Hospitals serving in France in WWI and was highly decorated for her services during both wars. She was the first woman to be appointed Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in London in 1921, was awarded a DBE in 1929 and became a founder Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She was one of the first in her field to insist on the provision of anaesthetics as standard for maternity cases.202
