Self-Proposed SSCs
These require the student to identify the subject area and a Supervisor. Thereafter it will be necessary for a Learning Contract to be agreed between the student and the Supervisor. One student (Lead Student) usually takes the initiative in approaching staff and developing the module but sometimes other students will ask to join the module. Whether these other students are accepted is entirely up to the Supervisor who will determine student numbers based on available resources. The crucial elements of the learning contract are the assessment process (see here) and the intended learning outcomes. Whether these are achieved by the end of the module can be used to gauge student performance, assuming that they have not been set too high at the outset. The contract can be re-negotiated in such circumstances.
Students are provide with information about how to self propose. Also they have asked for a short synopsis of the sequence of events which they should undertake during this process (see here).
