Biography
Dr Linley received the Quantum Fields and Fundamental Forces M.Sc. from Imperial College in 2017, and his Ph.D. in gravitational wave data analysis from the University of Glasgow in 2022. His doctoral work consisted of a deep analysis of a broad range of physical phenomena and theories that imprint in gravitational wave signals, and presented a novel technique to simplify difficult computational problems related to the data analysis of those signals, resulting in being awarded the Kelvin Award for his thesis. He joined the School of Mathematics and Statistics in 2023 as a Research Associate, and is currently working on modelling carbon emissions associated to UK household energy consumption in partnership with NatWest Group.
Research interests
My current research focuses on statistical modelling and predictive analytics, particularly in the context of energy systems and environmental data. I am interested in the development and evaluation of statistical and machine learning models, with a strong emphasis on handling uncertainty, structured data dependencies, and model interpretability.
Key areas of my research include:
- Generalised Additive and Generalised Additive Location Scale Shape (GAMLSS) models – for flexible, distributional regression modelling.
- Spatio-temporal modelling – integrating structured dependencies in energy and environmental data.
- Regression and supervised learning methods – with applications in forecasting and decision-making.
- Model selection and evaluation – using cross-validation, information criteria, and likelihood-based approaches.
- Energy and environmental applications – including probabilistic forecasting, emissions modelling, and uncertainty quantification.
More broadly, I am interested in the intersection of statistical modelling, applied machine learning, and decision-making under uncertainty, particularly in high-impact domains such as energy, climate, and sustainability.
