We would like to take the opportunity to congratulate our prize-winners from academic year 2016-17 who are as follows:

Graduating Prizes

The Dougall Prizes were founded in 1928 by Charles Shirra Dougall, MA 1894, in "grateful recognition of the encouragement received by the award of the Eglinton Scholarship in 1894". They are awarded annually to the most distinguished students in the Ordinary class of Mathematics. This year, the Dougall prize was awarded to Stuart Rankin for Level 5 and Andrew Beckett, Adam Bodor, Thomas Fletcher, Kenzie Nimmo and Scott Stirling for Level 4.

Archibald and Janet R McAulay Memorial Prizes were founded in 1980 by the gift of Mr AH McAulay, MA, BSc 1925, FSA, of New York, in memory of his parents. The Archibald McAulay Memorial Prize is awarded for distinction in the honours examination in Physics, and the Janet R McAulay Memorial Prize is awarded for distinction in the honours examination in Mathematics. This year the, Janet R McAulay Memorial Prize was awarded to Julian Sprossmann.

The PSI prize for best honours project in Statistics was awarded to Jack Hannah.

The Shell Prize, for best overall fourth year student in Statistics was awarded to Martino Ciaperoni.

Werner Weiglhofer died in January 2003 in an avalanche on the slopes of Bispen, in the Romsdal Alps in Norway, while snow-shoeing. The Department of Mathematics set up a fund in his memory, to provide an annual prize in his name for the best Honours project. This year, the Weiglhofer prize was awarded to Matthew Oliver for Level 5 and Thomas Holmes for Level 4.

Undergraduate Prizes

Level 3

The Dougall Prize was also awarded to two students in Level 3. They are Nikolaos Antonopoulos and Julie Lynch.

The SAS prize in Statistics, awarded annually to the best mark or the best performance in Level 3, was received by Zhuo Sun.

The Cunninghame Medal and Prize was founded in 1866 by Andrew Cunninghame, Town Clerk Depute of Glasgow. It is awarded annually to the most distinguished student in the Advanced Honours class of Mathematics. This year it was received by David Graham.

The Professor Patrick Lamont prize was awarded to Eleanor Porte, for the best Writing and Presenting Mathematics project.

The Lang Scholarship awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Head of School, was awarded to Irene Rizzo.

Level 2

The Dougall prize was also awarded to the following students in Level 2: Declan Bolster, Iain Cattermole, Michelle Dove, Niall McHugh, Gordon McNicol, Oliver Neill, Padraig O’Hara, Layli Semple, Stamatis Spyriounis, Martin Vrabec, Rachael Watson and David Watt.

The Ford-Forrest Bursaries were founded in 1989 by the bequest of Helen M Forrest, MA 1927. One bursary is awarded to the woman student obtaining the highest-class marks for her year in the Higher Ordinary Mathematics class and one to the woman student obtaining the highest-class marks for her year in the Physics 2(A) class. This year, it was awarded to Layli Semple.

The M Muir prize was awarded to Stamatis Spyriounis and Martin Vrabec.

Awarded annually to the best overall student in Statistics Level 2, the SD Silvey prize was awarded to three students this year. They are Padraig O’Hara, Layli Semple and David Watt.

Level 1

Class 1R/1S

The Dougall prize was also awarded to the following students in class 1R/1S: Barbora Ilavska and Inna Ivanova.

The Lorimer prize was awarded to Simona Bianco, Eirini Christofi and Ernestas Lingvinas.

The M Muir prize was awarded to Margarita Ruseva and Richard Stiskalek.

Class 1X/1Y

The Dougall prize was also awarded to the following students in class 1X/1Y – Marta Furmaniak, Aleksander Glodkowski, John Hughes, Sarunas Kaubrys and Andreea Musat.

The Lorimer prize was awarded to Joseph Connon, Sonja Kraiczy and Sofia Simola.

The M Muir prize was awarded to Aidan Murphy and David O’Connor.

Class S1Y/Z

The John Aitchison prize for best overall performance in Statistics 1Y/Z was awarded to Giulia Carfora.
