Scottish Operator Algebras Research (SOAR)

This operator algebras meeting is one in a series of meetings in Scotland focusing on operator algebras research and will take place in Glasgow on 2nd and 3rd December. Participants are welcomed from around the globe.

CMBE 2017

SofTMech members are involved in organsing three minisymposia for the CMBE 2017 in Pittsburgh (http://www.compbiomed.net/2017/).  These are:

  • “Integrative modelling of soft-tissue mechanobiology” – Paul Watton, Ray Ogden, Anne Robertson, Namrata Gundiah, and Mark Thompson.
  • “Biomechanics, Mechanobilogy and Translation in the heart” – David Nordsletten, Dominique Chapelle, Jack Lee, Xiaoyu Luo, Ellen Kuhl, Alfio Quarteroni, and Mariano Vazquez.
  • “Biological valve function and dynamics” – Raoul van Loon, Xiaoyu Luo, and Michael Sacks.

31st British Topology Meeting

The 31st British Topology Meeting took place in the School between 29th and 31st August as organised by Dr Andy Baker, Prof Tara Brendle, Dr Vaibhav Gadre, Dr Brendan Owens, Dr Andy Wand and Dr Liam Watson of our School.

‌50 years of Statistics at Glasgow

On 10th September, the 50th anniversary of the appointment of the first chair in Statistics in The University of Glasgow was celebrated.  Around 100 Statistics graduates, plus former and present staff, greatly enjoyed catching up with one another.  Participants included three of the five staff from 1966, the first (Economics and) Statistics graduate, two of the first Honours graduates from the single Statistics degree and the first PhD student (recently retired as President of NUI Galway).  This was a very enjoyable evening and, with graduates now in a huge variety of positions, a clear demonstration of the value of Statistics in the modern world.

SofTMech Modelling Week for postgraduate students

SofTMech, together with CMALS, ran a Modelling Week training event for PhD students and postdoctoral research assistants from 12th to 16th September. More than 30 UK and EU PhD students and postdoctoral research assistants attended the training event. Three topic-based groups worked extensively on research themes such as Heart, Drug Discovery, and Medical Devices. Sean McGinty, Dirk Husmeier, Xiaoyu Luo, and Hao Gao were among the academics and industrial partners who ran these training courses.  Umberto Noe, Xin Zhuan, and Benn McDonald from the SofTMech Centre acted as the group tutors on the Heart project.  The event received very positive feedbacks from the attendees.

European Researchers’ Night 2016

The recently-launched EPSRC SofTMech Centre took part in “Explorathon 16” as part of the European Researchers’ Night 2016. This was a free, Europe-wide public event dedicated to popular science and fun learning. Members of the SofTMech centre showcased their state-of-art heart and cancer modelling.
