Paper accepted – Annals of Mathematics

Stuart White’s joint paper “Quasidiagonality of nuclear C*-algebras” with Aaron Tikuisis and Wilhelm Winter solving Rosenberg's conjecture from 1987 and providing the final step in the classification theorem for simple C*-algebras of finite nuclear dimension, has been accepted by the Annals of Mathematics. 

The stable uniqueness across the interval argument used in the proof.

Royal Society Pairing Scheme

Liberty Vittert has been accepted on to the Royal Society Pairing Scheme, with details of who she has been paired with to be announced shortly.

“This scheme gives policymakers and research scientists an opportunity to experience each other’s worlds.” – www.royalsociety.org

Each year 30 research scientists are paired with UK parliamentarians and civil servants. They learn about each other’s work by spending time together in Westminster and the researcher’s institutions.

Those taking part gain an insight into how research findings can help inform policy making, and come away with a better understanding of how they can get involved.

We’ll hear more from Liberty about this after it begins later in the year.

School receives IMA accreditation

Accreditation from Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (the IMA) gives an external validation of our degree programmes. It means that our M.Sci. programme meets the educational requirements of the IMA's Chartered Mathematician designation. For more details, see:

Such Chartered Mathematician status can help our students gain professional recognition, which in term helps them to progress in their careers.

SofTMech secure EPSRC IAA grant

SofTMech has successfully secured an EPSRC IAA grant of £46k, where Weiwei Chen and Umberto Noe will conduct a six-month impact study on "Tracking biomarkers of heart attacks using a fast statistical emulator based on heart modelling and in vivo MRI" (led by Xiaoyu Luo, Dirk Husmeier, Hao Gao and Colin Berry). The project will start on 1st October and will be in collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline.

Wellcome Trust ISSF Award for Innovation in Public Engagement

Andrew Wilson has been awarded the Wellcome Trust ISSF Award for Innovation in Public Engagement for his Street Maths events at the recent Glasgow Science Festival. As part of the prize, Andrew receives £250 to spend on PE training, activities or materials.
