Adrian Bowman is involved in a rather unusual research project linked to the fate of the Franklin expedition of 1845 to find the North-West passage across the Canadian arctic. All hands were lost through causes unknown. A new paper investigates the “sick lists” from similar ships dispatched to find the Franklin expedition and uses this to provide evidence to question some assumed causes of illness and death among the crew.
