Shipwrecked in the Arctic: The Franklin Expedition, 1845

Senior Underwater Archaeologist from Parks Canada, Jonathan Moore, visited the University of Glasgow to give a lecture on a rather unusual research project linked to the fate of the Franklin expedition of 1845 to find the North-West passage across the Canadian arctic.

The School’s own Professor Adrian Bowman is involved in the research project and organised the event alongside Professor Keith Millar, Honorary Senior Research Fellow of the Institute of Health and Wellbeing. The event was held on Friday 4th November 2016 and was well attended by a wide and varied audience.

Full details about the project can be found at the following link: http://www.gla.ac.uk/news/headline_486504_en.html

What is modern geometry? The inaugural lecture by the Chair of Mathematics

As part of the School’s Distinguished Lecture Series the Chair of Mathematics, Professor Michael Wemyss, gave his inaugural lecture entitled “What is modern geometry?”. The event, which was well attended, was held on Friday 4th November 2016, followed by an informal reception.

European Researchers’ Night 2016

On Friday 30th September 2016, SofTMech participated the European Research Night outreach event held at the Glasgow Science Centre. Over ten thousands of visitors came to the event. Using various material provided by the whole Centre, SofTMech presenters Nan Qi, Hao Gao, Andrey Melnik, Danyang Wang, Liuyang Feng, and Xiaoyu Luo, set up an animated exhibition of mathematical models of heart and cancer, and "touch-it-yourself" soft tissue samples including a swine heart. They took the excellent face-to-face opportunity to explain SofTMech's research to the wider public.

The show fascinated the visitors, of varying ages, who were keen to put the gloves on and explore the soft tissue structure. The positive feedback was overwhelming; many left messages saying how much they enjoyed the display and how we should do this more often. The most rewarding outcome was when so many children proudly announced that they would study heart or cancer when growing up, as "this was so much fun!"
