SofTMech is the Centre for Multiscale Soft Tissue Mechanics – with application to heart & cancer, which was funded by EPSRC under its Mathematical Healthcare programme. The launch event for SofTMech was held at the Hilton Grosvenor Hotel at Glasgow, on Thursday 21st April 2016, which attracted around 100 attendees. The event included a lecture by the SofTMech PI, Prof Raymond Ogden, with a special plenary lecture by Prof Gerhard Holzapfel, TU Graz.

The centre is led by the University of Glasgow in partnership with St Andrew University, the University of Sheffield and Heriot-Watt University.  The centre’s aim is to establish a world-leading interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematics in Healthcare focused on soft tissue mechanics that will, for the first time, combine expertise from heart and cancer communities to develop a generic multiscale mathematical framework for soft tissue mechanics. This framework will rationally span subcellular, cellular, multicellular, tissue, and organ scales. Details on the centre and how to engage with it can be found from www.SofTMech.org.

“The Centre is an exciting development which closely aligns with a number of the University’s strategic research priority areas and our ambitious plans to support innovative world-leading research with real world impact”. Principal Anton Muscatelli University of Glasgow.
