On 5th May 2016 the University of Glasgow signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences-Next Einstein Initiative (AIMS-NEI), which makes the School of Mathematics and Statistics a member of their new partnership programme. The agreement guarantees UoG lecturers from our School, who want to give a course at AIMS, a teaching slot in a centre of their choice without having to go through the usual application procedure. Several of our staff members intend to continue to contribute to AIMS' mission which we as a School also benefit from, as teaching there provides an excellent opportunity for postgraduate student recruitment.

A delegation of AIMS-NEI representatives visited Glasgow for a small signing ceremony at which the Uli Kraehmer and Ian Strachan presented them with one of the original prints of the notes of Einstein's 1933 lecture here at Glasgow. This will most likely be displayed in the future in new headquarters of AIMS in Rwanda.

As part of this initiative, Ghislian Fourier visited AIMS in Ghana from 25th April until 15th May of this year. He provided the following report:

“During my visit the students were in their final phase which involves writing an essay, the master thesis, and I supervised three of them. All three students were working on topics on the interplay of algebraic geometry, representation theory and combinatorics.

All 48 students were incredibly motivated and I really enjoyed working with them. It should be noted that AIMS Ghana is located in a wonderful location. The image below is the view of the terrace outside my office! I am told that some of the locations of the other AIMS centres are even more astonishing and this initiative, and agreement with our School and University, offers the perfect opportunity to visit these “must see” locations.
