Viva success

Guowen Huang successfully defended his thesis on 22nd July 2016. Guowen's research was on the Quantification of Air Quality in Space and Time and its Effects on Health. He was supervised by Duncan Lee and Marian Scott OBE.

Prize winners 2015-16

We would like to take the opportunity to congratulate our prize winners from academic year 2015-16 who are as follows:

Levels 4 and 5

The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications Prize, awarded to two students who have achieved an outstanding performance in the final year of their mathematics course, was awarded to Alan Lazarus (Level 4) and Scott Marquis (Level 5).

The Shell Prize, for best overall fourth year student in Statistics was awarded to Francesco Sanna Passino.

The Dougall Prizes were founded in 1928 by Charles Shirra Dougall, MA 1894, in "grateful recognition of the encouragement received by the award of the Eglinton Scholarship in 1894". They are awarded annually to the most distinguished students in the Ordinary class of Mathematics. This year, the Dougall prize was awarded to Dylan Madden, Scott Marquis and Euan McGonigle for Level 5 and Alan Lazarus for Level 4.

Archibald and Janet R McAulay Memorial Prizes were founded in 1980 by the gift of Mr AH McAulay, MA, BSc 1925, FSA, of New York, in memory of his parents. The Archibald McAulay Memorial Prize is awarded for distinction in the honours examination in Physics, and the Janet R McAulay Memorial Prize is awarded for distinction in the honours examination in Mathematics. This year the, Janet R McAulay Memorial Prize was awarded to Level 5 students Roxanna Barry, Joseph Maccoll and Ciaran O’Neill.

Werner Weiglhofer died in January 2003 in an avalanche on the slopes of Bispen, in the Romsdal Alps in Norway, while snow-shoeing. The Department of Mathematics set up a fund in his memory, to provide an annual prize in his name for the best Honours project. This year, the Weiglhofer prize was awarded to Roxanna Barry and Joseph Maccoll, both Level 5.

Level 3

The SAS prize in Statistics, awarded annually for the best performance in level 3, was received by Wei Li.

Level 2

The Dougall prize was also awarded to the following students in Level 2 Mathematics – Nikolaos Antonopoulos, Amy Dodds, Theodora Nearchou, Ruaraidh Osborne, Quinn Palmer, Theodoros Papazachariou, Eleanor Porte, Rebecca Slowey, Rhys Wells and Emma Wilson.

The Ford-Forrest Bursaries were founded in 1989 by the bequest of Helen M Forrest, MA 1927. One bursary is awarded to the woman student obtaining the highest-class marks for her year in the Higher Ordinary Mathematics class and one to the woman student obtaining the highest-class marks for her year in the Physics 2(A) class. This year, it was awarded to Eleanor Porte.

The Matthew A Muir (Senior) prize, for best performance in Level 2, was awarded to Ruaraidh Osborne and Quinn Palmer.

Awarded annually to the best overall student in Statistics Level 2, the SD Silvey prize was awarded to Natalia Garcia Martin and Rebecca Slowey.

Level 1

Class 1R/1S and 1X/1Y (Mathematics)

The Dougall prize was awarded to Odysseas Sierepeklis and Rhys Wells.

The Lorimer prize, for best performance in Level 1, was awarded to Lorenzo Polidori and Layli Semple.

The Matthew A Muir (Junior) prize, for best performance in Level 1, was awarded to Chay Francis and Leah Spiedel Johnson.

Class S1Y/Z (Statistics)

The John Aitchison prize for best overall performance in Statistics 1Y/Z was awarded to Layli Semple and David Watt.
