Congratulations to Professor Ray Ogden (pictured) who has been awarded the Timoshenko Medal.

The Timoshenko Medal was established in 1957 and is conferred in recognition of distinguished contributions to the field of applied mechanics. Instituted by the Applied Mechanics Division, it honors Stephen P. Timoshenko, world-renowned authority in the field, and it commemorates his contributions as author and teacher.

Professor Ogden receives the Timoshenko Medal for the creation of a new area of applied mechanics research – the field of soft tissue mechanics. He has stimulated the work of a large number of practitioners in the field of modelling in biomechanics. Professor Ogden’s innovations in the modelling of soft biological tissues are of long lasting medical, epidemiological, economic and scientific importance.

Most previous recipients are theoretical mechanical engineers based in the USA and only three (all from the UK) have been applied mathematicians working in solid mechanics.

The awards ceremony is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday 15th November 2016.

Very well done, Ray.
