Trials and Tests

Abstract

Deirdre’s talk will be in two parts: the first section will cover the trials and tribulations of working with others; specifically of working with ill-defined problems that change over time.  She will use a case study to illustrate this: working on monitoring water conservation measures in student residences within the University of the West of England, Bristol (UWE). Deirdre will raise issues about how best to use these types of examples when teaching undergraduate students of Statistics the skills required for working in cross-disciplinary teams.

The second part of the talk will be a demonstration of how to use the DEWIS system.  This system was developed in UWE, for automating individualised online testing of students. Amongst other tools, it can use R to do statistical calculations.  This allows students to receive different datasets, all generated from the same underlying model in order to practice a problem independently.  She will use a small example, using simple linear regression, of how to use this as part of a formative assessment regime so that students can gain confidence in using command line based programs; but people are welcome to submit their own scenarios provided the data and analysis can be generated within the same R script.
