Abstract
The mapping class group of a closed orientable surface, S, has as its group elements orientation preserving homeomorphisms of S up to homotopy. This talk will outline the three types of elements in the mapping class group of a surface with genus at least 2; periodic, reducible and pseudo-Anosov.
