Abstract

The question of renormalization in QFT arises, roughly speaking, from the inability to decouple self interactions from a particle's equations of motion. This has lead to rich fields of study in both mathematics and physics throughout most of the last century. In this talk, I present a toy model of rooted trees to illustrate the problems that arise in renormalization, explain a Hopf algebraic approach to the same, and discuss how the Hopf algebraic approach allows one to view physical concepts such as renormalization group flow as concrete geometric objects.
