Abstract
Spatial analysis and spatial statistical analysis in particular is a fundamental subfield of geographical information science (GIScience). The recent decade has seen a dramatic growth in theoretical developments, methodologies and software implementations in spatial statistics. Meanwhile, recent years have witnessed increasing attention to the spatial (or spatial-temporal) dimension of phenomena in social sciences. This presentation highlights the significance of spatial statistics in social science research. Empirical studies are employed to demonstrate how spatial statistics can contribute to the research in a variety of domains, such as public health and real estate market. Finally, the challenges posed by Big Data as well as potential solution strategies will be discussed.
