Abstract

A well-trained octopus would be able to interpret expressions like x^2 + x + 3 when x is a matrix (or a linear operator) rather than a just number.

Expressions like exp(x), 1/(x^2 + 7), or max{min{1, x},0} pose a greater challenge and are probably beyond cephalopods.

However, by the harnessing the power of mathematical analysis, human beings can make sense of such expressions. In this seminar we shall look at the various techniques for doing so.
