Abstract

Coupling a detailed three-dimensional description of the heart to a dynamic model of the systemic arterial circulation remains a major mathematical and computational challenge. In this work, we develop a coupled model consisting of a dynamic three-dimensional finite-strain model of the human left ventricle (LV) anda dynamic one-dimensional, physiologically based structured-tree model of the systemic arterial circulation. The coupling is achieved by matching the pressure and flow rate at the aortic root. The governing equations of the system, which also incorporates the fluid-structure interaction and the active contraction of the myocardium, aresolved using a combined immersed boundary finite element (IB/FE) method, and the Lax-Wendroff scheme of Olufsen et al. Results of this coupled model are compared both to measured data and to results of a simplified coupled model, in which a three-parameter windkessel model is used to provide the boundary condition for the left ventricle. The model provides insight into the roles of the physiological parameters, as well as predictions of blood flow and pressure at any position in the systemic arteries.
