Abstract
E∞ ring spectra provide one notion of
derived commutative rings. I will explain what
this means and then give a quick tour around some basic
ideas about power operations resulting from this sort of
structure.
In the case of ordinary mod p homology, the relevant
power operations are called Dyer-Lashof operations and
are intimately related to the homology of symmetric groups.
I'll explain how to do calculations with these using the
coaction of the dual Steenrod algebra.
If time permits I'll discuss some examples which involve
Thom spectra associated with Hopf invariant one maps.
