Abstract

Ultrasound is one of the techniques used to nondestructively generate images of the internal structure of objects such as those found in the human body and in safety critical structures (for example, nuclear plants, oil pipelines, aircraft engines, and railway tracks). To generate the images one must consider the inverse problem of - given the solution to a wave propagation problem can one recontruct the geometry of the material that has given rise to this solution. Recent technologocial advances in the deployment of ultrasound arrays has the potential to significantly improve our ability to create such images. This potential will only be realised of course if new methods that exploit this wealth of data can be derived. Addressing this need will form the focus of this talk.
