Abstract
The bidomain equations are used to model electrical activity within cardiac tissue. This set of equations consists of a pair of second order partial differential equations, modelling voltage activation within the tissue, coupled with a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations, modelling current within the cardiac cells. The activation of this potential is initiated via Purkinje myocyte junctions. At these junctions current leaves the purkinje fibres and enters the cardiac cells. These fibres are extremely thin and thus create great difficulty when modelled in conjunction with the Bidomain equations. In this talk we will present an efficient numerical method for the bidomain model. This will be combined with a reduced one dimensional model of the Purkinje fibres. Numerical results will show the robustness and efficiency of the proposed method. Finally, the effect of free running Purkinje fibres will be investigated.
