Abstract
Ventricular fibrillation is a dangerous arrhythmia in the heart, but despite its importance we do not fully understand the mechanisms by which it is initiated and sustained. Investigating these mechanisms requires a broad multidisciplinary approach and involves applied mathematics, high performance computing and visualisation techniques, as well as input from experimental physiology and clinical cardiology. In this seminar I will explain what we can find out about the mechanisms of ventricular fibrillation using experimental techniques, show how computational models of electrical activity in the heart can be used as an investigative tool, indicate the limitations of a modelling approach, and finally I will talk about recent data collected from the human heart.
