Abstract
Material bodies are generally assumed to be free of stress at t = 0 (i.e. before any deformation has occurred) whereas there might be stresses present (called residual stresses) which play an important role in the physical and mechanical properties of the material. Also, we will see that not every material can support residual stress and different kinds of materials with traction free boundary condition have restrictions on the form of residual stress. Special cases for isotropic and transversely isotropic materials are considered.
