A slice genus lower bound from Khovanov-Rozansky homology

Abstract
Generic perturbations of the Khovanov and Khovanov-Rozansky homologies give rise to good bounds on the smooth slice genus of a knot. We shall discuss this, and show how a simple topological argument can bypass a lot of algebra in proofs of these results.
