Dynamo theory: For school children

Madeleine Heideman (University of Glasgow)

Wednesday 6th November 15:00-16:00 Maths 311B

Abstract

Dynamo Theory is the current leading theory of magnetic field generation in astronomical objects. One of the biggest subjects of this theory is the Solar Dynamo. Over the summer, I worked on writing an article for the journal `Frontiers for Young Minds', intending to explain Solar Dynamo Theory to 12-15 year old school children. This talk will go over the process of science communication in the fields of mathematics and astronomy, and how thinking like a child allowed me to conceptually understand much of MHD, as well as how to better understand core concepts in applied mathematics.
