Comments on turbulent reconnection

Wednesday 11th September 15:00-16:00 Maths 311B

Abstract

In this talk, starting from reconnection in laminar MHD (which dominates most of the literature) I will show how this theory may be transposed to a turbulent setting (which is the real astrophysical case). I will argue that although many concepts can be transferred from laminar reconnection, the underlying physics requires some important changes. For example, I will put into context statements like "turbulent reconnection is an ideal process, not requiring resistivity." Being an internal seminar, my approach will be informal and discussion and input from the audience is highly desirable.
