Visualisation and Gamification

Louise McMillan (Victoria University of Wellington)

Wednesday 11th September 13:00-14:00 Maths 311B

Abstract

I will talk about each of my three research areas. The first is statistical techniques for population genetics, work that began during my PhD with Rachel Fewster. We have developed a visualisation method to illustrate the genetic connectivity of animal populations, and genetic measures that can tell when one population of animals was founded by individuals from another population. I am currently working on unsupervised clustering of DNA samples combined with additional covariates.

The second area is model-based clustering of categorical data. These techniques allow you to identify groups of similar individuals based on their categorical responses, and obtain interpretable information about the patterns observed in those groups.

Thirdly, I will talk about a computer game I am developing to help students revise first year statistics topics.
