On self-contact of tubular thin solids

Abstract
Inspired by the theory of knots, we propose a generalization of O'Hara's Möbius energy (a functional which prevents self-contact of knots) which shares some of its properties but is applicable to the more complicated case of a tubular neighbourhood of a regular curve in space. We also recover O'Hara's energy in the limiting case and show some continuity properties with respect to the curve.
