Abstract
What does it mean to pick a ``random’' hyperbolic surface, and how does one even go about ``picking'' one? Mirzakhani gave an inductive answer to this question by gluing together smaller random surfaces along long curves; this is equivalent to studying the equidistribution of certain sets inside of moduli space. Based on these results, she conjectured that certain ``twist tori'' also equidistribute inside of moduli space. In this talk, I will report on joint work (in progress) with James Farre in which we address this problem and give a general method to construct random hyperbolic surfaces from random flat ones.
The talk will be preceded by a tea time at 3:45pm. The Zoom link for the seminar is https://uofglasgow.zoom.us/j/98078798957 and the passcode is the genus of the two-dimensional sphere (4 letters, all lowercase).
