Rossby Waves: bridging scales on Earth’s Atmosphere and the Sun

Abstract
Rossby waves are large scale vortical motions associated with the conservation of potential vorticity in rotating fluids. Rossby waves are one of the key elements of the dynamics of the Earth’s Atmosphere, playing a role in some of the main atmospheric phenomena and connecting the weather of different regions of the globe as well as bridging global scale motions with localized weather systems. MHD Rossby waves were recently detected on the Sun, with the suggestion that MHD Rossby waves play a similar role for the Solar activity: to bridge spatio-temporal scales.
