The effective collective: Why animal groups are smarter together

Colin Torney (University of Glasgow)

Tuesday 24th April, 2018 18:00-19:00 Seminar Room 116

Abstract

In this talk I will discuss how animal groups in nature work together and are able to solve problems that are too complex for individuals acting on their own. I will present some theoretical models of animal behaviour and describe empirical evidence for collective intelligence, but show that evolution will not necesarily tune groups to behave in optimal ways. Finally, I will present some recent efforts to study these questions in migratory species using novel techniques to collect and analyse data.
