Abstract
The main result of George Bergman's highly cited(1057 citations) paper titled "The Diamond Lemma for Ring Theory" is that, under suitable conditions, a free associative algebra has a basis. An application of this theorem is the Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt Theorem. During this talk, we will outline the set up for Bergman's Diamond Lemma and discuss why it is important in ring theory.
