About the speaker
Professor John Ockendon, FRS gained recognition for his contributions to fluid dynamics and novel applications of mathematics to real world problems stemming from industry. He is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Oxford and an Emeritus Fellow at St Catherine's College, Oxford. He was the first director of the Oxford Centre for Collaborative Applied Mathematics (OCCAM) and a former director of the Smith Institute for Industrial Mathematics and System Engineering. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1999, and awarded the Gold Medal of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications in 2006. His mathematical collaborations with industry led him to organise annual meetings of the Study Groups with Industry from their early beginnings, the success of which contributed to their continued growth internationally.
Abstract
Mathematics-in-Industry collaborations have spread around the world in recent decades. This could not have happened without these collaborations being mutually beneficial to academics and industrialists. This talk will describe some examples of how, within the general area of differential equations, new mathematical ideas have emerged and give hints of how industry has been able to profit from such collaborations.
We are looking forward to having you.
