Dr Joseph Crampin

Biography

Dr Crampin is a Lecturer in International Law. Joseph completed his PhD at University College London (UCL) in 2022 on ‘Good Faith in International Dispute Settlement’, funded by the London Arts and Humanities Partnership and UCL. He also holds an LLM (Distinction) from UCL. During his PhD, Joseph was a Teaching Fellow at UCL, where his teaching included public international law and private international law. He was also Assistant Editor at Current Legal Problems and a Director of the UCL Public International Law Pro Bono Project. His research interests broadly encompass general public international law, international courts and tribunals, international investment law, international environmental law and private international law. 

In addition to his academic career, Dr Crampin has active experience in international litigation. He has been involved in litigation before the International Court of Justice, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

Research interests

Joseph’s current research is focussed on issues of general international law and international litigation. He is currently working on issues relating to abuse of process and abusive treaty interpretation, and the relation between international law and domestic law. 

More generally, his research interests cover all core topics of public international law, including the law of treaties, general principles of law, jurisdiction and the work of international courts and arbitral tribunals. His research also extends to international investment law, international environmental law and private international law. 

Joseph is currently working on turning his PhD thesis into a monograph. He is also the co-author, together with Prof Malgosia Fitzmaurice and Dr Megan Wong, of International Environmental Law: Text, Cases and Materials (Edward Elgar 2022). His research has been published in the Modern Law Review and Cambridge International Law Journal.
