Biography

Professor Metzger joined the School of Law in the autumn of 2006. Formerly he was Professor of Civil and Comparative Law at the University of Aberdeen. His principal areas of research are Roman and civil law, and in particular the law of procedure.

In the United States he served as a Judicial Law Clerk for the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, and the Texas Court of Appeals. He is a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association and the State Bar of Texas.

He is the author of A New Outline of the Roman Civil Trial (1997) and Litigation in Roman Law (2005), both from the Oxford University Press, and editor of A Companion to Justinian's Institutes (Bristol U.P & Cornell U.P., 1998); Law for All Times: Essays in Memory of David Daube (Roman Law Society of America, 2004); and David Daube: A Centenary Celebration (Traditio iuris romani, 2010). He also prepared a revised edition of Barry Nicholas' Introduction to Roman Law in 2008, and prepared, with Dr Karen Baston, a catalogue of The Roman Law Library of Alan Ferguson Rodger, Lord Rodger of Earlsferry, in 2012. His articles and reviews have appeared in Classical Review; Edinburgh Law Review; Irish Jurist; IVRA: Rivista Internazionale di Diritto Romano e Antico; Journal of Legal History; Journal of Roman Studies; Law and History Review; Loyola Law Review; Revue Internationale des Droits de l'Antiquité; Roman Legal Tradition; Studia et Documenta Historiae et Iuris; Tijdschrift voor Rechtsgeschiedenis; Zeitschrift für Papyrologik und Epigraphik; and Zeitschrift der Savigny-Stiftung für Rechtsgeschichte.

He is Editor-in-Chief of Roman Legal Tradition, a journal devoted to the civil law tradition in the ancient, medieval, and modern law. He is also creator and editor of IusCivile.com, an internet portal for Roman law. He serves on the council of the Scottish Universities Law Institute, representing the University of Glasgow, and on the council of the Stair Society, a charity dedicated to Scottish legal history. He manages the imprint Traditio Iuris Romani. He is preparing An Introduction to Roman Civil Procedure for the Oxford University Press.
