Lawyering for Social Change Clinic: Racial Justice

The Lawyering for Social Change Clinic is founded on the belief that the most effective and lasting social change occurs when directly impacted communities are at the forefront of the struggle. Rooted in the principles of movement and community-based lawyering, the Clinic recognises that lawyers can play a critical role in supporting communities and grassroots organisations to challenge unequal power structures by working collaboratively to address systemic human rights abuses.

Through experiential learning and collaboration, students in the Clinic will critically examine and reimagine the role of lawyers within progressive social movements, developing an understanding of how to use law as a tool for social change. At the intersection of theory and practice, they will consider relevant literature in the fields of legal mobilisation; cause lawyering; and human rights. Students will be encouraged to reflectively consider both the possibilities and limitations of the law – and lawyers - as a tool for social change.
